From Karen and Henry Kimsey House and Sam House: Definition of a Leader One who is responsible for their world. Everyone is a leader, therefore everyone is responsible for their world. People change in stages. They go from not even really considering making a change, to contemplating making one, to preparing to make the change…and THEN (and only then) do they spring into action. The actual behavior change (like starting to exercise, or going on a diet) is not the first stage of change, but the fourth. Here’s the long and the short of it: To be successful in a New Year’s Resolution, you need to be in that fourth stage of change. What stage are you in? (Prochaska and DiClemente)
Chase the work: Purpose over position. --DeRay Mckesson, "Pod Save the People" “ Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person. Having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what’s worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.” George Eliot There is a vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action. And because there is only one you in all time, this expression is unique. And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium…the world will not have it. It is not your business to determine how good it is, nor how valuable, nor how it compares with other expressions. It is your business to keep it yours clearly and directly, to keep the channel open. MARTHA GRAHAM, Dance to the Piper Early in my adult life, as I pondered what career I should pursue, my father, an English teacher and writer, helped me by telling me that the word, "career", means "route". And so, I started on a path that I am still on today. I have spent a decade each in different aspects of my career: elementary school teacher, nonprofit board leader, nonprofit consultant, and now, coach. The through-line to my work has been a connection to people and their learning and I continually draw upon skills and experiences from every decade in my work today. As I work with my coaching clients, I have found that It can be a relief to them to think of their careers as a route or a path. What route are you on?
